Our instructors bring decades of competitive experience at the national and international level.
Maestro Tsipis began fencing in 1967. By 17 he was a Master of Sports of the USSR; by 20, a member of the Ukrainian national team and two-time USSR champion. He coached at the legendary "Dynamo" Kiev club — home to world and Olympic champions — before moving to Chicago in 1994. A deeply experienced and creative coach with over 50 years in the sport.
Emmeline Bae has been fencing saber since middle school, winning the 2019 Div III Summer Nationals and competing at numerous national tournaments. She has coached for three years including at New Trier High School. Emmeline shares her expertise and enthusiasm with fencers of all ages and skill levels, with a deep passion for developing the next generation of competitors.
Modern fencing is practiced with three different weapons, each with its own rules, target area, and tactical style.
The most technical weapon, foil rewards precision and timing. Points are scored by thrusting the tip to the opponent's torso only. Right-of-way rules determine who scores when both fencers hit simultaneously.
The entire body is a valid target in épée, and there is no right-of-way — the first to land a hit scores. Often described as "chess on legs," épée rewards patience, distance control, and timing.
The fastest and most dynamic weapon. Saber fencers can score with both the tip and the edge of the blade, targeting the upper body. Explosive footwork and aggression define the saber fencer.
We provide equipment for new fencers. However, frequent fencers are expected to purchase their own gear. If you continue using club equipment regularly, a rental fee may apply.
Duel Fencing offers equipment for purchase on site. We also recommend Blue Gauntlet Fencing Gear and Absolute Fencing Gear online. Need help with sizing or deciding what to buy? Ask us — we're happy to help!
We offer classes for kids, teens, and adults. Children should be at least 8 years old to start fencing. Contact us to find the best class for your age and skill level!
Please reach out to us before your first visit! We'll help you find the right class, make sure the timing works, and answer any questions you have. We want every new fencer to have a great first experience.
Yes! Private lessons are available by appointment with any of our coaches. Contact us to schedule a session based on your goals and availability.
